The need to traffic women and girls is solely driven by the demand of the buyer.

Canada is a source, destination and transit country for human trafficking. According to the International Labour Organization, human trafficking generates global profits of an estimated $150 billion USD each year from the exploitation of people.

There is an over-representation in street prostitution and among the women who have been murdered in prostitution amongst Indigenous women, youth and girls.

“Incidents involving multiple offences where human trafficking was the most serious violation often involved prostitution offences as secondary violations (58%).” [1]
